Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park
Overview
Welcome to Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park. This park is a prehistoric Native American site, where many different Native American cultures occupied this land for thousands of years. The lands first inhabitants came to the land during the Paleo-Indian Period hunting Ice Age mammals. Around 900 CE, the Mississippian Period began, and people constructed mounds for their elite, some of which remain here today.
When visiting the park, enjoy the beauty of Ocmulgee with some of the many activities offered. Explore the continent's only Earth Lodge and Early Mississippian temple mounds. Immerse yourself in a wetlands environment by taking a stroll on our boardwalk. Step back in time through the wilderness of the Ocmulgee River floodplain with many of the trails offered to hike through. Visit the site of the only two Civil War Battles fought in Macon. Picnic on the grounds at shade covered picnic tables. Walk though the museum, and learn of the Native American history of Middle Georgia.
