Harmony Hospitality & Pride in Macon, Georgia
Nestled in the heart of Georgia, Macon shines with its genuine Southern hospitality, celebrated inclusivity and rich cultural offerings. It's a city that harmonizes its storied past with a vibrant, inclusive present, making it a welcoming home to many.
It’s the hometown of Little Richard’s bold styles that proved revolutionary both artistically and socially, challenging societal norms and inspiring generations of artists to embrace individuality and inclusivity. And, the chosen home of the Allman Brothers Band, recognized for their place in breaking societal barriers and a harmonious convergence of cultural traditions in its sound.
Each June, local organization Macon Pride amplifies this spirit of inclusivity and community with its spirited celebrations for International Pride Month, Macon Pride Week during the month of September, as well as, continue to host various events throughout the year! Their philosophy is simple “provide a place to celebrate and affirm individuality & importance by giving expression to our community’s rich history along with its dedication to promote acceptance of all individuals regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.”
This year, Macon Pride kicks off with a dazzling array of events that promise to engage, entertain, and unite. Start with a visit to the largest African American cultural museum in Southeastern America, the Tubman Museum. There you will find the domed ceiling -- representing basket weaving brought over from Africa -- enveloping a special exhibit of Macon’s own, “Pioneers & Trailblazers.” The limited time exhibit honors 22 individuals honored for their fight for equality.
On June 14, attend the “Pride in Our Park” event, with Southern Queer Folk Hikes, on the powerfully symbolic clean-up event on the lands of Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park. Land that has shown scientific evidence of over 17,000 years of continuous human habitation and has been advocated by many to become America’s newest national park, the first National Park in the state of Georgia, and the first to be co-managed with the partnership of the lands original inhabitants, the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. This initiative goes beyond environmental stewardship—it fosters a deeper connection between the LGBTQ+ community and the natural beauty of our local parks. Through collective efforts to restore and preserve these cherished spaces, participants celebrate inclusivity, self-expression, and the shared sense of belonging that flourishes in the great outdoors.
For those seeking a night of glamour and exuberance, join “Christina’s Birthday Party” festivities and fundraiser at The Capital Theatre for some added color to Macon's beloved nightlife on Saturday, June 21! Bringing together some iconic “Georgia Icons” and featuring Kylie Sonique Love and Naomi Smalls from RuPaul’s Drag Race! “Dine Out / Shop Out” on June 25th, and then get ready for a sizzling night cheering on the Macon Bacon for “Pride Night” at Historic Luther Williams Field on June 26th! Your ticket comes with unlimited delicious eats and a stylish hat to top it off.
Then, pick up a paddle by joining Ocmulgee Outdoor Expeditions on a float down the scenic Ocmulgee River from Macon’s most locally-loved park, Amerson River Park. Here, community and allies, come together for a special Pride celebration on the water! Those just wanting to join the fun can disembark after the short trip from put in to take out. Those up for the challenge, can continue the journey further downstream together. It will be a day of adventure, connection, and Pride in the great outdoors!
