Exploring the Haunted History of Macon, Georgia
Macon, Georgia, is a city rich in history, and with that history often come tales of the supernatural. Having had my own encounters with "the beyond," I love delving into the city's fascinating past, especially in the College Hill Corridor. The very first home my husband and I explored in Macon was located in this area, and while I was alone in the house, I saw a shadowy figure glide past a door in the basement. For those intrigued by the paranormal, the College Hill Corridor offers a wealth of spooky stories and haunted spots. As autumn leaves begin to turn and Halloween draws near, the community and the city prepare for a thrilling experience featuring a robust calendar of activities throughout October.
The Haunted 1842 Inn
One of the most intriguing spots in the College Hill Corridor is the 1842 Inn. This charming antebellum mansion, now a bed and breakfast, is not just known for its Southern hospitality but also its ghostly residents. The inn has a rich history dating back to, you guessed it, 1842. Over the years, it has been the site of numerous unexplained occurrences that have left both guests and staff convinced that the inn is haunted.
Many visitors have reported seeing apparitions, hearing disembodied voices, and feeling sudden drops in temperature. One of the most famous ghosts is said to be that of a young woman who once lived in the house. Guests have described seeing her wandering the halls in a flowing white gown. Her presence is both eerie and sorrowful. Could she be searching for a lost love or perhaps guarding a long-forgotten secret?
In the next episode of MACON BEYOND, which I host and will be released just in time for Halloween, viewers will have the opportunity to explore the haunted 1842 Inn. Paranormal investigators will use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to try to communicate with the spirits said to wander the mansion. Will we capture definitive proof of the supernatural? You will have to watch to find out.
Haunts and History on the Hill
For those who prefer a more interactive experience, the Haunts and History on the Hill tours offer an opportunity to explore the haunted locations of College Hill Corridor firsthand. These guided tours are scheduled for Monday, October 28, 2024, and Wednesday, October 30, 2024, and promise to be educational and spine-chilling.
Participants will walk the historic streets of the corridor, stopping at various points of interest where local legends and ghost stories abound. From old cemeteries to historic homes, each location has its unique tale of the macabre. Tour guides, well-versed in the area's history and folklore, will share these stories with a theatrical flair, making for an unforgettable experience.
One of the tour highlights is the visit to the Cannonball House, another historic site with a reputation for being haunted. The house earned its name after being struck by a cannonball during the Civil War, and some believe the spirits of those tumultuous times still linger. Visitors have reported hearing phantom footsteps and seeing shadowy figures within the house. The Haunts and History tour will delve into these stories, offering a glimpse into the past and the spectral echoes it leaves behind.
