Black Heritage Trail Launches
The Black Heritage Trail of Macon: Available Today in the App Store
MACON, GA (February 1, 2023) —Visit Macon has officially released its next self-guided trail on the Tour Macon app: The Black Heritage Trail of Macon. Available for free download from the Apple or GooglePlay app stores by searching ‘Tour Macon.’
The Black Heritage Trail of Macon seeks to tell the story and increase awareness of African American history in Macon, Georgia in order to build a more inclusive community today.
The easy-to-use mobile app serves as the ultimate tour companion for visitors to discover and explore thirty-seven historic and cultural sites that made up the very fabric of the black community of Macon in the 19th & 20th centuries. From the historic Pleasant Hill District – with its connections to iconic figures like Little Richard, Lena Horne, and many others – to the various churches, squares, and historic businesses that represent groundbreaking moments in Macon’s history.
The Black Heritage Trail will also feature a growing collection of black-owned tourism businesses currently in operation in Macon-Bibb County that will be added into the trail over the course of Black History Month (February).
During the month of February, Visit Macon has also expanded its tour offerings to include the African American Heritage Van Tour, an opportunity to experience Macon’s African American Heritage via a riding group tour with a live tour guide narrating the sites. Tours will begin at the downtown Visitors Center at 450 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd at 11:00 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday throughout the month. Tickets for the tour are $8 per person and can be booked through the Visit Macon website at www.maconga.org/groups/group-tours/ or by calling the Visitors Center at (478) 743-1074 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays.
Visit Macon has worked to develop The Black Heritage Trail in partnership with the Washington Memorial Library, Rock Candy Tours, Historic Macon Foundation, NewTown Macon, Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce, and the many individuals who have contributed to these efforts.
The Tour Macon app elevates and enriches the self-guided tour experience by serving as a digital companion with GPS locations, stories and multimedia that can be continuously expanded and updated.
