Then and Now Tour
Overview
Step back in time and explore the rich architectural heritage of downtown Macon, Georgia, on this guided walking tour.
Macon was founded on the site of the Ocmulgee Old Fields, a land inhabited by Native Americans for 13,000 years before the arrival of Europeans. The early years of Macon's economy were centered around cotton. The city's location on the Ocmulgee River proved pivotal in facilitating trade and economic growth. During the American Civil War, Macon played a crucial role as the official arsenal of the Confederacy, providing vital supplies and munitions to the Southern forces.
Despite the challenges of the Civil War, Macon emerged resilient and embarked on a transformative journey in the 20th century. The city experienced remarkable growth, positioning itself as a thriving town in Middle Georgia. Macon became a prominent transportation hub, connecting various parts of the state through its well-established rail lines and highways. The city's strategic location attracted industries, fostering economic diversification and urban development. Many of the buildings you'll see were saved from demolition during an economic downturn in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Today, Macon's downtown core is once again a vibrant hub of entertainment, business, and activity, all set against the backdrop of a charming historic downtown square.
On this tour, you'll learn about the city's history and see some of its most iconic landmarks, including the Grand Opera House, the City Auditorium, and the Terminal Station, and read stories about the efforts that were made to preserve them.
