Experience for yourself the places Oprah visited when she and her Harpo team of 100 came to thank her loyal viewers in historic Macon by hosting her “My Favorite Things” show and a special "Behind the Scenes" episode in November 2007! Be sure to first stop at the downtown Convention & Visitors Bureau, located 450 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, for way-finding information and travel planning assistance. The visitors center is open Monday - Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
WHERE OPRAH STAYED
1842 Inn, located 353 College Street in Macon’s Historic Intown Neighborhood district, was Oprah’s temporary “home away from home.” Named one of the Top 10 Inns in the U.S. by Country Inns Magazine, this elegant, lavishly decorated historic bed and breakfast IS the place to stay when visiting historic Macon. Stately columns and a grand front porch welcome visitors with a true southern charm. Upon her arrival at the Inn, Oprah remarked, “Look at the size of those columns...THIS is the front porch I’ve been dreaming of!”
Hilton Garden Inn, located 1220 Stadium Drive, is Macon’s newest hotel accommodation easily accessible to the interstate, downtown touring, shopping and dining. Home to Harpo employees during their visit to Macon, this lovely hotel offers comfortable surroundings, professional service and up-to-date amenities including flat screen televisions, ergonomic seating and complimentary wireless high-speed internet access.
PLACES OPRAH VISITED
The Hay House, located at 934 Georgia Avenue, is a National Historic Landmark and is magnificent in detail featuring luxuries far ahead of its time. This Italian Renaissance Revival mansion was completed in 1859 and has been dubbed the “Palace of the South.” Featured on A&E’s “America’s Castles,” this must-see of Macon lets all those who enter feel like royalty. Oprah and her production crew replicated the Hay House porch and interior elements for the stage of her "Favorite Things 2007" show.
The Ocmulgee National Monument, located at 1207 Emery Highway, is home to over 10,000 years of Native American Indian heritage and culture. Visitors may hike along nature trails, study archaeological remains, climb ancient Indian mounds and visit inside a ceremonial earth-lodge. Free to public.
Th Tubman Museum, located at 340 Walnut Street, is the south’s largest facility devoted solely to African American art, history and culture. Learn more of African American history and heroes, including one of Oprah’s favorite heroes, Harriet Tubman. When visiting, try to find Oprah’s picture in the mural wall of the museum!
The Georgia Music Hall of Fame, located at 200 Martin Luther King, Jr Blvd, showcases Georgia’s rich music heritage. See a star-studded array of entertainers from the “The Architect of Rock-n-Roll” Little Richard, “The Crown Prince of Pop” Otis Redding, the Allman Brothers Band, “The Godfather of Soul” James Brown and more.
The Macon City Auditorium, located in the downtown square between First, Poplar and Cherry Streets, has one of the world’s largest copper covered domes. View the exterior of this impressive site where Oprah taped the “My Favorite Things” show.
PLACES OPRAH DINED
Fish n’ Pig, located at 6420 Mosely Dixon Road on Macon’s beautiful Lake Tobesofkee, serves southern prepared dishes in a casual dining atmosphere. Be sure to taste one of Oprah’s newest favorite things to eat...alligator tail! “Fish n’Pig is known for serving the best alligator around these parts. The secret is to fry it really deep and then put some sauce and a little bit of lemon on it,” Oprah said.
H&H Restaurant, located at 807 Forsyth Street in downtown Macon is known as the legendary eatery and hangout for the Allman Brothers Band members. Since the mid 1950’s, now 76-year old Mama Louise has been cookin’ up delicious southern style soul food! Stop in for a hearty breakfast or a filling lunch.
Nu-Way Weiners, located at 430 Cotton Avenue (one of 7 locations in Macon!) has been serving their famous weiners since 1916 and is the perfect stop for a quick bite to eat for lunch. “You cannot come to Macon without trying a Nu-Way hot dog’” Oprah said. This must-dine hot spot is the oldest hot dog stand in the nation. “Now I understand what all the fuss is about!,” Oprah remarked.
Marco Restaurante Italiano, located at 4581Forsyth Road, is considered one of the most authentic Italian restaurants east of Rome and provides first class service along with delicious Italian cuisine in an elegant dining atmosphere. The perfect dining spot
