When the girls and I visited Macon, we expected a fun weekend getaway. What we didn’t expect was how much personality the city has. And honestly? It’s the perfect weekend getaway if you want something different from Savannah or Charleston.

My Top 3 Hotels in Macon

Honestly? It reminds me a little of Nashville before Nashville became Nashville.

One thing I loved most about Macon is that it still feels authentic. It hasn’t been overrun by tourism yet, so everywhere we went still felt local, relaxed, and genuinely cool instead of overly curated.

And somehow, the city still carries all of its music history without feeling commercialized. I mean, we hung out with the grandson of Otis freaking Redding. Are you kidding me!

Where To Stay In Macon, Georgia

If you’re planning a girls’ trip to Macon, stay downtown.

Hotel Forty Five was the perfect home base because we could walk to almost everywhere, and the vibe felt elevated yet relaxed.

The hotel feels modern boutique with:

It’s the kind of place where you immediately want to sit in the lobby and order a cocktail before dinner.

And honestly? It felt more like a boutique hotel you’d find in Nashville or Charleston than what most people expect from Macon.

What To Do In Macon, Georgia

Visit the Otis Redding Museum

One of my favorite parts of the entire trip was visiting The Otis Redding Museum.

My dad absolutely loved Otis Redding, so this stop felt really meaningful to me.

What made it even cooler was getting shown around by Otis Redding’s grandson and hearing stories about the family, the music, and everything they’re continuing to build through the Otis Redding Foundation.

The museum may be small, but it’s packed with history, memorabilia, stage outfits, records, and personal pieces of Otis Redding’s life and career.

You can genuinely feel how important music history still is to Macon.

And honestly? That’s what makes Macon feel different from a lot of destinations. The music history doesn’t feel manufactured for tourism. It still feels personal and alive there.

Visit The Big House Museum

Another highlight of the trip was visiting The Big House Museum, which honestly ended up being one of the most emotional stops for me personally.

The Allman Brothers were my dad’s favorite band growing up, so walking through the actual home where members of the band lived during their early Macon years felt surreal.

The museum is filled with:

  • Handwritten lyrics
  • Instruments
  • Old photographs
  • Personal memorabilia
  • Recreated rooms
  • Pieces of Southern rock history

And if you’re an Allman Brothers fan, this is absolutely one of the most meaningful music-history stops in the South.

Visit Rose Hill Cemetery

If you’re an Allman Brothers fan, Rose Hill Cemetery is another must-visit stop in Macon.

You can visit the gravesites of:

  • Duane Allman
  • Gregg Allman
  • Berry Oakley
  • Butch Trucks

And if you continue walking toward the back of the cemetery near the railroad tracks, you’ll also find the location where one of the famous Allman Brothers album cover photos was taken.

It’s located behind the angel statue and instantly recognizable if you grew up around their music.

Explore Downtown Macon

Downtown Macon has this cool mix of:

  • Historic architecture
  • Rooftop bars
  • Local boutiques
  • Murals
  • Cocktail spots
  • Coffee shops
  • Live music history everywhere

It feels trendy without trying too hard.

And because everything is relatively close together, it’s really easy for a girls’ weekend where you want to park once and explore.

One thing I didn’t expect was how much music history is woven throughout the entire city.

This city genuinely helped shape American music culture.

Where to Eat & Drink in Macon, Georgia

H&H Restaurant

If you visit Macon and DON’T stop at H&H Restaurant, you’re doing it wrong.

H&H became famous because “Mama Louise” Hudson basically took care of The Allman Brothers Band during their early Macon years when they barely had money to eat.

Today, the walls are covered in memorabilia and music history, and they still play old-school Southern rock throughout the restaurant.

Honestly? Sitting there listening to the music immediately brought me back to my dad.

It didn’t feel like a tourist stop. It felt personal.

This is not the place to order basics and move on.

What to order:

  • Soul Rolls
  • Fried green tomatoes
  • Any of the Allman Brothers-inspired menu items
  • Southern breakfast plates
  • Fried chicken
  • Meat-and-three plates

The Soul Rolls are the move — egg rolls filled with fried chicken, pimento cheese, and collard greens, served with peach chili sauce. That is exactly the kind of thing you order for the table and then immediately regret not ordering two.

Loom

Located inside Hotel Forty Five, Loom was one of our favorite dinner spots of the trip.

The restaurant feels elevated while still keeping that relaxed Southern energy Macon does so well.

  • Sharing appetizers
  • Slow dinners that turn into long conversations

Kudzu Seafood Company

Kudzu Seafood Company was such a good dinner stop for our first night in Macon. It has that casual-but-cool downtown feel, and the menu is very Gulf Coast seafood meets Southern comfort food.

A few things that stood out from the menu:

  • Char-grilled oysters
  • BBQ shrimp and cheese grits
  • Cajun scallops with Tasso cheese grits
  • Seafood platters
  • Po’boys
  • Lobster grilled cheese
  • Mahi jezzel
  • Seafood pasta

We had the char-grilled oysters and the BBQ shrimp and cheese grits, and both were very much giving “order for the table and don’t overthink it.” The oysters were buttery, rich, and the kind of appetizer that disappears way too fast, and the shrimp and grits were exactly the cozy Southern seafood moment you want on a girls trip.

The Rose Room

One thing Macon surprised us with? The cocktail scene. I’m legitimately contemplating driving back just for the Porn Star Martini.

The Rose Room was one of our favorite spots for:

  • Espresso martinis
  • Girls dinner photos
  • Wine nights
  • Cocktails before dinner
  • Late-night drinks downtown

The vibe feels upscale without trying too hard.

And if you go, order the Porn Star Martini. It was made with vanilla vodka, passionfruit, lime, prosecco, and topped with passionfruit popping boba pearls that honestly made the whole drink. Sweet, fruity, bubbly, and very much “girls trip cocktail energy.” It’s the kind of cocktail everyone orders one of after seeing it hit the table.

Switch

Switch is one of those places that immediately makes a girl’s trip more fun.

The themed cocktail bar changes throughout the year and has such a fun girls-night-out energy.

Especially during the Christmas season.

Fall Line Brewing Co.

Craving the poblano ranch dressing at the moment. Get it with your homemade chips. Vibes. The drinks, the spot, and the food are all so good! Great shops line the walk there, so save time and have some fun!

  • Outdoor seating
  • Relaxed downtown atmosphere
  • Live music nights

Oliver's Corner Bistro

Great downtown lunch spot when you want something casual but still cute enough for a girls' weekend.

Just Tap'd

Perfect for wine, small bites, and slow afternoons downtown.

Sweet Eleanor's Divine Desserts

Sweet Eleanor’s is the kind of stop that makes sense at the end of a girls’ trip when everyone wants coffee, something sweet, and one last cute downtown moment before heading home.

It’s named after the owner’s grandmother, which makes it feel extra charming and local instead of like a generic bakery stop.
