When the weather starts to heat up, so does the competition in Macon, Georgia with its very own one-of-a-kind baseball team, the Macon Bacon! The team's season starts at the end of May so prepare yourself to #StartTheSizzle!

Peaches, Pirates, and Bacon...Oh MY!


Turn back the clock, and the Bacon was known by another Georgia staple, the Macon Peaches! The team played on and off again throughout nearly 50 years since Luther Williams was built in 1929 with the namesake of Macon's mayor at the time. It has since undergone millions of dollars worth of renovations to bring us the fantastic venue that fans adore today. Outside of the Macon Peaches, the team went through several name and ownership changes including but not limited to: the Macon Braves, Macon Pirates, Macon Redbirds, and Macon Dodgers.
Now Luther Williams would go on to see many players play on the field that would later become some of the greatest in major league like Hank Aaron and Jackie Robinson, in fact, the biopic movie “42” about Robinson was filmed at Luther Williams Field in 2013! In the picture featured above, the field was also where "Brockmire" the tv show was shot more recently in 2017.

The Bacon Now

In 2018 though, fans dueled it out through a contest to submit the winning nameing rights. A few other options that were top contenders were Macon Heat, Macon Noise and Macon Soul! (We are a big fan of the Bacon decision though, who doesn't love bacon?) And with the name comes some light trash talk against another Geoeriga team but with a way less exciting name...the Savannah Bananas. The rivalry is all in good nature though and we look forward to competing against the Bananas and all of the Coastal League teams each year!

What’s with the giant strip of bacon? Kevin Bacon Lore

There is no better mascot for the team than a 7-foot tall smiling, bacon strip mascot called, Kevin! According to the team's website, his creation was one of incredible tales.

"We reached out to some of the top scientists in the country to help us solve our problem. We needed a half person and half bacon hybrid.
Months and months went by figuring out how to make the perfect piece of bacon come to life. They tried everything to make our bacon come to life. Radiation, genetic coding, etc. Nothing seemed to work and all hope was lost. On the last attempt to bring bacon to life, the radio started playing "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins. The bacon started to wiggle. The louder the music got, the more the bacon started to move. As the music kept playing, the bacon came to life. Alas, Kevin was born. "
There’s not much Kevin won’t do for a laugh, he’s known for pranks, and shenanigans on and off the field! He’s the sizzling embodiment of all the cheers and encouragement from fans with a little sass and a whole lot of spunk. And yes, his helmet is a frying pan,and his favorite song is "FootLoose'

Visit Macon in celebration of the Macon Bacon's 2024 Baseball Season will host a Free License Plate Day on Tuesday, May 21st, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Luther Williams Field!

Drive on in and claim your free Macon, Georgia logo license plate, installed on your car for free! But that's not all - while you're here, enjoy a complimentary Kona shaved ice (while supplies last) and explore "The Pork Shop," the official merchandise store of the Macon Bacon, to gear up for the summer season ahead. Catch a glimpse of the Macon Bacon players as they warm up for a fantastic season with open practices throughout the day.

The 2024 Macon Bacon Schedule begins on Thursday, May 23rd in Florence, Alabama with the opening ‘home’ game of the season on Saturday, May 25th complete with opening night fireworks!
