Legendary musician Otis Redding, Jr., has been immortalized by a life-size bronze sculpture, depicting him sitting on the pilings of a dock strumming a guitar with his famous song lyrics on a pad beside him. The statue graces a riverfront park next to the Otis Redding Memorial Bridge, within walking distance of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and historic Downtown Macon. Redding, who unseated Elvis Presley as London based Melody Maker Magazine’s International Male Vocalist of the Year in 1967, died tragically in a plane crash on December 10, that same year, just days after recording his hit “(Sitting on) The Dock of the Bay.” Nearly 35 years later, the singer/songwriter still has a huge, dedicated international following and has been posthumously inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Britain’s Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.
