Kingdom of Gold, photographs of Ghana
Overview
In March of 2000, Ellen Kaplowitz photographed the enstoolment (enthronement) of Asantahene Otumfo Osei Tutu II, the 16th monarch of the Ashanti kingdom.
This visual essay captures both the celebration and modern relics of the slave trade, as well as images of city life. These images of daily activity showcase the rich cultures of Ghana and how its traditions persist in the modern world. Over the past 20 years, Ellen Kaplowitz has primarily focused her work on Asia and Africa. Her photographs have been exhibited in museums across the U.S., including the American Museum of Natural History, New York, the Field Museum, Chicago, and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh, among others.
