Overview
Wesleyan College is thrilled to announce an exciting lineup of events throughout February in honor of Black History Month. This month-long celebration is dedicated to recognizing the achievements and contributions of the African American community and fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment for all students.
The following events have been meticulously planned to offer diverse and engaging opportunities for learning, reflection, and celebration:
February 7, 2025: Opening of "The Water Spirit Will Take Us Home: The Story of Igbo Landing"
The Leadership Lab. The original exhibit is on loan from the Tubman Museum of African American Art to Wesleyan College, on view at the downtown Leadership Lab through Fri Feb 21st.
February 7, 2025: Equity and Inclusion Discovery Day
Dive into meaningful discussions and activities centered around themes of equity and inclusion. Featuring E Pluribus Unum and the First Friday Igbo Landing Podcast and Exhibit at the Leadership Lab.
February 11, 2025: View, Chat, and Chew
Enjoy a thought-provoking viewing session followed by engaging discussions over a shared meal. This session will feature the short film Good Hair: Perceptions of Racism from 12pm to 1pm at Manget.
February 19, 2025: Campus African Attire Day
Celebrate cultural heritage and identity by wearing traditional African attire. Judging for prizes will take place in the cafe from 12pm to 1pm.
February 26, 2025: Black History Music, Fashion, and Talent Program
Experience a dynamic showcase of music, fashion, and talent, highlighting the richness of African American culture. The event will feature student singers, poets, models, and a special guest speaker from the community from 12pm to 1pm at the OSP Dining Hall.
These events are designed to foster connection, engagement, and celebration among students. They provide a platform for African American students to proudly celebrate their heritage and contributions, while also promoting cultural awareness and appreciation across the campus community.
Recognizing Black History Month on campus is vital for nurturing a sense of belonging and inclusivity. Through these events, students will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Black history and culture, appreciate diversity in all its forms, and create lasting memories that will be celebrated for years to come.
